You Cannot Serve God And Money

  • 2 mins read

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:21

We run all through our lives to gather money, name and fame that belongs to the world. We fail to recognise that they all will cease to exist one day. At times, they cease even as we watch them happening in front of our eyes. That is why Jesus tells us not to gather treasures for ourselves on earth. He has a better place for us where we will live forever with Him and that is where we need to store up our treasures. These heavenly treasures are not materialistic and they never cease to exist.

No one can destroy the treasures we store up in heaven. These treasures are unaffected by moths and rust, unlike the ones we possess on earth. These treasures can’t be stolen, unlike the ones we have on earth. Our heart will be set, where we store our treasures. That is why we need to set our eyes on things above in heaven and not on the things of this world.

Jesus further goes on to say in Matthew 6:24, “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” God and money are two masters. We can’t be faithful to both. All of us need money to live in this world but money shouldn’t be our master. If we serve money, we can’t serve God.

Paul says in Romans 8:18, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” If the sufferings of this world are not worth comparing with the heavenly glory to be revealed to us, how much more is the money that perishes?

As we begin this month, may we make a decision to consciously avoid making money our master and have God enthroned in our lives?
